 "Some good; some Bad" 2009-10-28
By Parchment & Quill (NY United States)
I am a bit disappointed with this product. Considering the price I truly hoped it would live up to the claim of freezer-microwave-dishwasher safe... unfortunately after one or two washes the lids do not sit correctly. While I'm still able to use the base for serving food to the family, if I want to freeze in them I have to tape the lid closed for security.

So why even give it a 3 rating? Because all other products of this type have illustrated the same problem. No one seems to have found a way to make sure the lids don't loose their tightness (so it's my hope that companies will see reviews like this and get to the research lab!)

"I finally got an efficient and safe microwave cover" 2010-01-31
By DosLady (Bend, OR USA)
This Nordic cover, made in the USA, is the safest plastic as stated in a comment in another review by Ron Thorn, with a link.

Got tired of using papertowels that soaked into the foods. Never would use the plastic wrap that seemed to evaporate into the food.

This cover is 3 inches high, has vents along the sides at the top. One can grip the cover at the top to remove it with the groves. Fits perfectly on a dinner plate. I notice there is minimal splatter and it is steamy inside which keeps the food warmer longer.

I would cook an egg stirred with a little milk, cover it with a paper towel and it would pop and sometimes rupture. I cook the egg the same exact way but covered it with this cover and nothing happened. The egg was cooked and it was steamy inside the cover. There wasn't any bits of egg inside the microwave cover either.

 "Omelets in a jiffy" 2010-03-06
By Vee (NY)
The Nordic Ware Microwave Omelet Pan is quite a nifty little kitchen gadget. Before purchasing, I had said to myself, "Making an omelet in the microwave? Impossible." I got this pan and was proven wrong. To my surprise, the omelets made in this pan come out rather tasty. I was also pleased that the eggs come right out of the pan and don't stick at all. However, as others have said, you must use some kind of cooking spray, oil or butter for a completely non-sticking surface when removing the egg from the pan. It's easy to clean. No stuck-on, hard to remove egg whatsoever.

I remember reading one or maybe a few reviews that said their pan didn't come with instructions. Mine did. I followed them and the resulting omelet was not the best. It came out a bit hard. It was edible and not bad but not particularly the best omelet. The instructions are rather standard and goes as follows:

- 2-4 eggs

- 2 tablespoons of milk or water

- Beat in a small bowl

- Pour the mixture in the omelet pan evenly on both sides

- Cook for 2 minutes

- Stir from outside in

- Place the toppings on each half and cook for another 1.5 minutes

- Remove from the microwave

- Fold the pan to make the omelet

What the instructions do not take into account is the wattage of the microwave you're using or that times may vary depending on the amount of eggs you use.

My findings based on the use of 2 eggs, which I think is more than enough(for me anyway), is that hand beaten eggs took about 2 minutes to be completely cooked and eggs mixed with an electric hand mixer took 1.15 to 1.30 minutes to be completely cooked or when the eggs started to bubble up and it looked like they would bubble over and the wet egg was consumed. Any longer or following the above directions provided by Nordic Ware resulted in the hard or rubbery eggs that I described earlier. However, using the times I indicated resulted in a soft, fluffy, fully cooked omelet which was more to my liking. Another important note is that I'm using a 1250W microwave. Perhaps the factory directions would be more suitable if you have a lower wattage microwave or are perhaps using more than 2 eggs.

I mostly make cheese omelets. I like to place the cheese on after I take the omelet out of the microwave because from experience when I did it as instructed, the cheese came out watery.

Pan fried, stove-made omelets taste slightly better in my opinion possibly because I like my omelets lightly browned but this pan still does a fine job and in a fraction of the time.

I also use the omelet pan for making eggs to put in my breakfast sandwiches. I just beat one egg and pour it on one side of the pan. Cool gadget for quick eggs in the morning.

 "RUBBER OMELETS" 2010-03-01
By Duane Curtis (USA)
NO MORE! I love this little omelet pan.

Whip up a couple eggs (1 at a time) with a little shot of water added. Dump one egg in each side of the pan. Microwave until the eggs are done around the edges. Stir eggs, add onions, cheese, etc. Microwave until done. Eat! Its that easy. The omelet comes out light and fluffy, just great.

The pan cleans up just as easy. This is a wonderful product.

My only wish is a larger pan was available to make a four egg omelet (2 eggs each side). I like a lot of stuff in my omelet and one egg is all I can get each side on this pan.

Want scrambled eggs? Just stir more often while cooking!

 "Excellent Microwave Omelet Pan" 2010-02-12
By Marilyn P. Russ (San Francisco, CA)
I was skeptical when I purchased this product, but I am very impressed. Just following the instructions and coating the inside with some cooking spray results in a quick and well prepared omelet (not as good as on the stove, but great none the less). My first omelet came out fluffy and perfectly done. Clean-up is a breeze. I defintely recommend this product.

This is a much better product than the previous one (different item). The hinges on the previous Omelet Pan I had broke within a couple of weeks.  "Wonderful" 2009-12-15
By Shala Kerrigan (Anchorage)
I got this for my daughter and I'll be honest, I've never used it. She prefers it of course if I make her omelets on the stove, but sometimes we have things for dinner she doesn't want. On those nights she gets out the omelet pan and puts together an omelet for herself. It's faster than fast food and she can fill the omelet with whatever weirdness she wants. Goldfish crackers, cheese and hot sauce are a favorite for her.

Use a non-stick spray and it cleans up fast. I picked up a second one for my adult son since he's pretty much all microwave all the time. Fantastic value.

 "No more paper bags!" 2009-01-10
By Gadget Freak (Austin, TX USA)
I bought a pair of these at a local "going out of business sale" thinking it might be money wasted. I was wrong....for years I've baked potatoes in the microwave in a paper bag (the cleaning lady at the office told me about that method) but the first time I used the Nordic Ware Potato Cooker it worked better! The potatoes cook faster and do not dry out or become rubbery as somtimes happens in the microwave.

I like it so well that I carry one with me when I travel, and if I wish I can bake perfect potatoes in my hotel room microwave. Amazon's price is more than double what I paid but this is the only place I've found them and I'm here to buy more while they're still available. Too many good products like this disappear prematurely.

P.S. - I haven't tried to use multiple cookers in the microwave oven simultaneously....don't know how that would turn out. Also, the idea of eating an ice cream sundae out of one of these seems a little wierd to me....it's a potato cooker, for crying out loud!

"Not for crispy bacon lovers!" 2009-08-13
By R. Walker (Houston, TX)
While the NORDIC WARE MICROWAVE BACON MEAT RACK does the job, it does have a couple of major drawbacks for people like me who like their bacon crispy. It cooks the bacon well and the grease drains into the channels below. However, if you cook your bacon crispy (longer cooking times), some of the earlier-rendered bacon fat cooks into the channels. I have soaked and scrubbed with various tools, but I cannot get all of that hard, cooked-on grease out of those skinny channels and angles. Furthermore, if you cook several slices crispy, the bacon creates more grease than can be contained in the channels, and (defeating the purpose of this rack) the bacon ends up sitting in a pool of grease anyway.

I am currently looking into other types of microwave bacon cookers, but in the meantime, I have taken to using a Chinet paper plate with several paper towels. It soaks up all the grease and cleanup is as easy as throwing everything in the trash afterward.

I have a question, not a real review.

I just bought the Presto 16" electric skillet which comes with a glass (see-through) cover.

I would actually prefer the smaller Presto 11" electric skillet (mainly to save room and because I cook small meals). But, from the picture of the 11" skillet, it looks like the cover is NOT glass.

Would someone who has purchased the 11" skillet please tell me about the cover - is it glass or metal?

    Many thanks!

     "Poached Salmon for Two" 2009-03-01
    By R. L. Zwart
We had an electric skillet from our wedding 55 years ago. It finally gave up the ghost. We bought the Presto 06620 11 Inch Electric Skillet from Amazon. It was a perfect size for two people.. We poach 2 pieces(about 1/2 pound each) Wild Atlantic Salmon in spiced apple cider with cinnamon, slightly salted, allspice, cloves, lemon juice and zest, brown sugar. Setting the control on medium low, cover off, and poach each side five minutes, doing the skin side down first and stripping the skin and dark grey fat off the flesh, after the first turning; finally another five minutes on the stripped side again, which helps rid the fat taste. Check for completion by slitting the thickest area and looking for wet pink or silvery color(not cooked). Turn again, adding another five minutes if not done. Place on dinner plate with thin sliced lemon crossections on top, add a small amount of the liquid for taste. The Presto skillet keeps an even temperature and is easy to clean with its nonstick coating.

    By silversurf (Planet of Paint)
How did I get along without this pan? I cook a lot of one-person meals, and this pan is great for that purpose. But, it holds a lot more than I would have guessed from seeing the picture. You can cook main dishes for several people, and side dishes for a larger group because of the depth of the pan. I am a vegetarian, cooking mostly Asian food, and it works for stir-frying, braising, steaming and just about any other method you can think of. The only things I would use my conventional stove for now is boiling big batches of noodles or pasta. This elctric skillet and my rice cooker can handle everything else, and they take up very little counter space. Easy and quick to clean. Most of the time, I can clean it with a damp paper towel and a bit of detergent, don't even need dishwasher:).

My only dislike is that the lid is plastic and maybe could break someday, but otherwise this is the perfect pan!

Cute liddle thing. Feet have no rubber pads, it slides all over the counter. The temp seems to run about 10 degrees higher than the dial setting, measured with an IR device. Heat is quite even over the entire surface. The grease channel has to be dumped, kind of messey with a hot griddle. I use a slice of old bread to mop it out, real treat for my puppy. Plan on trying a silicon mat under it in hopes that it will stay put better. I use egg rings, so the small size hasn't been a problem.

UPDATE: A "Silpat" brand half sheet silicon bake mat is perfect for a base to keep the "Liddle" from sliding.

     "WOW!!! Great Cooker/Fryer!!!" 2010-03-08
    By K. malcolm
I was wanting a good fryer for a while now. I wanted a multi-tasker and not just a fryer. I read alot of the reviews posted on here before buying. Some of the ones with lower star ratings had me conserned but there were far more 4 and 5 stars than anything. I did end up ordering one.

I used it for the first time yesterday and it made the BEST homemade fried chicken strips. I marinated the chicken in buttermilk for about 4 hours and then coated them in a penko crumb mixture with spices and parmasean cheese. The chicken didnt take long to cook and came out crispy and golden. Just keep an eye on whatever you are frying. Once its the golden brown color, take it out. The instruction booklet has frying times for certain foods. The chicken says 13 minutes but I think thats just bone in whole whole pieces. I found that out when I burnt the first few pieces. The strips only took about 3-4 minutes with cooking 5 strips at a time. What I loved is the chicken was not greasy at all.

I was so happy with the way it turned out. It is very easy to clean.

Today I used the cooker to make spegetti sauce with macaroni noodles. It cooked great.

The cooker is bigger than what the picture gives justice for.

Great product and well worth the money.

"Poor Slow Cooker, Poor Fryer, But Boils Water Quickly" 2010-01-28
    By Friend (Wisconsin)
After a frustrating experience using this cooker last night, I came to amazon looking looking for a replacement and now feel compelled to write a review.

I wanted to get a fryer to use for light and infrequent kitchen deep frying. This unit seemed like a good deal since it also doubles as slow cooker so I took a chance. The first (and last) frying event did not go well. I tried to fry some breaded vegetables but the cooker could not keep up. In other words, I'd add like 3 items to the pot and the cooker could not bring the temp. of the oil back up. Well, that's ok, I've still got a slow cooker right?

Wrong. I tried to slow cook some beans last night...this thing can not maintain a simmer. Here's the deal, the thing is made of aluminum...just a terrible material to use for a slow cooker. Aluminum is an extremely responsive conductor but does not store heat so you are at the mercy of the cooker's heating element cycle; your cooker is always too hot or too cold to maintain a basic simmer.

You set it at 200 and you get boiling so you turn the temp. down the tiniest amount possible and you get nothing (because the element is now off. But just leave that temp. alone and wait a minute or two, that's right! it'll start boiling again when the element cycles back (for 20 seconds or so), then back to nothing. It will not simmer, only boil intermittently.

So for all this things touted uses, you get a warming device that will boil your food for 20 seconds every 2 minutes and something that will boil water rather quickly. I recommend passing.

     "Most versatile appliance!" 2009-12-28
    By L. Mrozinski (Sacramento, CA)
I wish I'd discovered this item years ago. So far I've steamed, boiled and fried with great success. Most impressive is the speed at which it boils water. I make a lot of Rachael Ray 30 minute meals and I'd say I always end up going over the 30 minutes just getting the water boiled and pasta/potatoes cooked when her recipes call for those ingredients. This little cooker boiled my water in no time, and larger quantity than I normally use. Steaming was a breeze. Wish I'd had this when I was making baby food for my son, and really wish I'd had it when my husband and I took a six-week trip across the country. Would have been an indispensable addition to our two-burner "stove" in the tiny condo we stayed in. I'm definitely going to be giving these as gifts in the future as I think they're a must-have for any kitchen.

"It's great, no matter what Alton Brown says!" 2009-12-10
    By Michael I. Gorchov
This unit is similar to the one I have (old style 06000), so I have included my review here as well.

I bought one at Walmart last year. I use it pretty often, but mostly for making popcorn. Turn temp to 350, put a couple-three tablespoons of peanut oil in the bottom, and then when the oil heats up throw in 1/3 to 1/2 cup of popcorn. Put the cover on and keep the pot moving while the corn pops. When the corn has just about stopped popping, turn the heat off and pour the popcorn into a bowl. Butter, salt and eat. YUM!

I've deep-fried scallops in it, steamed vegetables, cooked rice, made soup and even baked potatoes. The thing works great! I wasn't going to write a review until I saw Alton Brown talk some trash about it on Good Eats. I got pretty defensive about my humble Presto cooker! He was doing a silly episode about "man food" like corn dogs and thin, square hamburgers. Well, when Mr. Brown was explaining how to fry the corn dogs he said (while holding a Presto mutlti-cooker) that a pot with an heating element on the outside of the bottom wasn't a good idea because first the element had to heat the pot and then it had to heat up the oil. Too slow. After that he displayed three home-use rectangular fryers with immersion type heating elements. He said they were also better because they each had cooking baskets and break-away magnetic cords. He picked the one with the digital controls, while implying that this was somehow better than the manual rotary temp control.

I don't know if A. B. gets paid for product placement on his show, but I really thought he was being disingenuous regarding the Presto "pot." First of all, about the heating element on the bottom of the Presto cooker: During the frying demonstration, Mr. Brown had some text placed over the screen that said that if you didn't have a special electric fryer, that a pot on the stove-top would work fine. Isn't that interesting? What the heck is a pot on the stove, but just a heating element on the outside of a pot that heats up the pot and then the oil inside? That's exactly what he was criticizing the Presto kettle about. What gives? Secondly, the Presto cooker DOES TOO have a magnetic break-away electric cord to keep the unit from tipping when the cord is yanked by accident. Also, the Presto cooker DOES TOO come with a frying-steaming basket, which Brown implied it didn't have. Nya, nya, nya! See, I can be just as immature as Alton Brown!

I don't know if the rectangular fryers are really better, but I'm sure they cost a lot more. My Presto cooker was $26.85 at Walmart. I keep it in a lower cabinet - it doesn't take up much space there. I pull it out when I need it. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and simple. When we go to Maine in August, I'm allowed to take only one of my counter-top appliances. So, I just take the Presto cooker with me. Normally, I cook steel cut oats in a small bowl, sitting in water, in a slow cooker (a bain marie -sort of - found the idea here [...] I can do the same thing with the Presto cooker. And I have a pot with me on vacation that I can do so much more with.

One last thing. With my slow cooker I use a plug-in timer called a Rival Smart-Part. But it's not rated to control the wattage of the Presto multi-cooker. I found a heavy-duty programmable digital timer that I use to turn the Presto cooker off and on automatically. This device really allows me to use the Presto cooker like a slow cooker, without over-cooking stews and such when I am out of the house all day. The Presto multi-cooker is a terrific appliance! Buy one now, and don't believe everything you see on TV!

12/14/09 Update: Here is another reason to buy a Presto multi-cooker: I'm making a beef stew with red wine tonight. What a mess browning the stew beef! I have a 3 quart Wagner cast-iron chicken fryer, and this is what I used to brown the beef chuck cubes. These days the meat hasn't been aged much, and so it is very difficult to brown properly. I managed to do it in batches, but the stove-top got pretty messy by the time I was done. I put the browned meat, vegetables, and garlic into the Presto cooker ( I made sure to deglaze the chicken fryer with wine and include all the tasty bits) and continued to cook the stew. And then I could proceed to clean up the stove-top while the beef stew simmered away in a different part of the kitchen. I am very pleased not to have to clean up all that oil spatter after dinner!

This is my second one only because my daughter didn't know what to get me for Xmas so I told her to get me another one. I only use it for frying and store the grease in the pot so some has dripped down the kettle and looks crummy otherwise I would keep this one. I have had it for about 7 years and it still works. Hope the new one lasts as long.

     "Great Sharpner" 2010-03-11

I decided to give the Presto 08800 Pro EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener a try. I have always used oil stones, but after trying this on an old knife first, I was surprised how sharp it was. I now use it for all my knifes.

By Zinger (Somerset, New Jersey United States)
I never owned a knife sharpener before and was wary of anything which would require me to hold the blade at a specific angle. This sharpener had angled slots to control how the blade hit the wheel. It was extremely easy to use and very quickly sharpened the blade on my 8-inch chef's knife.

"GREAT SHARPENER FOR THE PRICE" 2010-03-05
    By THE MURPHY FAMILY (ALASKA)
We sharpen our Henckles regularly and received this knife sharpener as a gift. Tried it the first time and have used it ever since. I sharpen all the knives at once then my husband puts the fine edge on them with a steel. You only have to run the knife once or twice over the steel and watch out. Bought one as a gift because we liked our's so much.

"OLD KNIFE GIVEN NEW LIFE" 2010-03-02
By C. Jones (Washougal, WA, US)
I HAVE LOOKED AT AND TRIED SEVERAL KNIFE SHARPENERS. SO WHY NOT ONE MORE?? WHEN THE SHARPENER ARRIVED I WAS SUPRISED AT ITS WEIGHT...GOOD! I READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AS ADVISED AND THEN I RETREIVED THE OLD CHEAP KNIFE THAT I LOVE. I SHARPENED & HONED IT AND THEN TRIED IT OUT ON A RANDOM POTATO...WOW IS THIS A NEW KNIFE??? THEN I CUT "THE TOMATO", A TRUE TEST, MY CHEAP KNIEF SLICED RIGHT THROUGH THE TOUGH SKIN. I USED MY BELOVED KNIFE THIS MORNING (3 WEEKS LATER) IT IS STILL SHARP! I HAVE NOW SENT ONE TO MY DAUGHTER AND BROTHER IN LAW. THE ONLY NEGATIVE THAT WE AGREE ON IS THAT IT IS LOUD WHEN YOU FIRE IT UP BUT WITH THE RESULTS WE HAVE SEEN HOW OFTEN IS THAT GOING TO BE? ALSO DON'T PUSH DOWN TOO HARD WHEN YOU ARE SHARPENING OR THE MOTOR WILL DRAG. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.
